Former NFL superstar Chris Johnson has been diagnosed with ALS, and the disease has progressed so rapidly that he now relies on a speech-generating device that tracks his eye movements to communicate.

The 40-year-old running back, best known for his record-breaking 2009 season with the Tennessee Titans, shared his condition in an interview with Michael Strahan on "Good Morning America" alongside his wife, Brittany.

Johnson first noticed symptoms through weakness in his right hand. After medical tests, doctors told him at age 39 that he had Lou Gehrig's disease.

One physician recommended medication that might extend his life by a few months and advised him to get his affairs in order.

Determined to fight, Johnson watched an interview featuring actor Eric Dane and ALS expert Dr. Merit Cudkowicz on GMA.

He contacted her and said working with her has provided a new approach to battling the illness.

He now takes three medications to slow the disease and undergoes therapy to reduce inflammation. However, he can no longer hold a cup or lift his daughter.

Shortly after his diagnosis, Johnson had his voice recorded so he could use eye-tracking technology to continue conversations.

Johnson praised his wife for her care and remains dedicated to raising awareness for ALS and supporting research.

Drafted 24th overall by the Titans in 2008 out of East Carolina, Johnson set an NFL record with 2,509 yards from scrimmage in 2009.

He earned three Pro Bowl selections and was named Offensive Player of the Year.

Despite his physical limitations, Johnson emphasized that the disease has not changed his inner self.

"People sometimes look at the physical disability and assume you're not still the same person inside," he said.

"I still think the same. I still dream.
