LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell has promised a "full and comprehensive review" following the fatal police shooting of a dog in Canoga Park, as outrage continues to grow.
In a statement released Thursday, McDonnell said there is "no incident more serious" than when an officer fires a service weapon.

He added that the loss of a pet is "deeply personal."
The chief acknowledged the community's grief, noting that for many, a dog is a companion, a source of comfort, and a family member.
McDonnell stressed that the investigation will take time to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability.

He also said officers face unknown dangers daily but are expected to exercise sound judgment, restraint, and respect for life whenever possible.
According to the LAPD, officers responded to a call about a woman screaming at a Canoga Park apartment complex.

The woman was celebrating the New York Knicks' NBA championship.
Police say the dog, a 2-year-old mixed golden retriever, Saint Bernard, and poodle named Jameson, charged toward officers after its owner was told to secure it.
The owner insists her dog did nothing wrong.

McDonnell said the LAPD's job is to follow the facts wherever they lead and to keep the public informed as the investigation unfolds.
