Laken Snelling, a former University of Kentucky student-athlete, pleaded guilty Friday to first-degree manslaughter in the August 2025 death of her infant son.
She had previously entered a not guilty plea in April.

In court, Snelling was emotional as she explained her actions, saying she was under a lot of stress and that her baby came unexpectedly.
She admitted to depriving the newborn of oxygen and then cleaning up the birth by placing the baby and towels in a plastic bag, without telling anyone.

Snelling also pleaded guilty to abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant.
She waived her rights to a trial and witnesses, with sentencing scheduled for October 16.
Prosecutors recommend a 10-year sentence for manslaughter, one year for abuse of a corpse, another year for tampering with physical evidence, and 12 months for concealing the birth.

According to reports, Snelling gave birth alone in her bedroom on August 27, 2025, and concealed the entire event.
Her roommates heard suspicious noises and investigated after she left the house, discovering blood-soaked towels and the lifeless baby in bags in her closet.

They contacted police, and Snelling was arrested on August 31.
