The HONOR Robot Phone sounds like a strange concept, but it's now a real product. We've spent some time with it and here are our first impressions.

The phone features a unique gimbal camera system.

It has a 200MP main camera with a 1/1.28-inch sensor and F1.6 aperture, a 200MP telephoto, a 50MP ultrawide, and a 50MP front camera.

The main camera can be used tucked inside the module with a lens cover. However, you'll need to wipe the cover often to keep it clean.

When using the gimbal, you must slide the cover to the side first. The phone will remind you if you forget.

When the gimbal is fully extended, the phone's balance tips a bit. HONOR includes a special case with a magnetic ring and lanyard to help.

The magnetic ring is better than most because it can bend into more angles. The robot camera can also dance to music or track human movement while streaming.

Image Quality and Gimbal Performance

We tested the gimbal stabilization while walking and running. It performed very well, with only slightly less stability than the DJI Pocket 4P when running.

Video specs top out at 2.8K 120FPS with the gimbal out, but you can shoot 4K 120FPS when the camera is tucked away.

Comparing 2.8K and 4K at 30FPS, the gimbal provides better stabilization, but the 4K footage has better image quality and dynamic range.

We hope an OTA update will enable 4K with the gimbal, as the option appears grayed out in settings.

It's Still a Phone

Despite the camera hardware, the HONOR Robot Phone is smaller than most Ultra and Pro-level phones. However, it is heavier, even heavier than Ultra phones.

The phone feels well-built and like a carefully engineered masterpiece. It comes with a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen5, up to 16GB+1TB storage, and a 7060mAh battery.

The gimbal will consume more power, so we'll see how battery life holds up in our full review.

Overall, the HONOR Robot Phone is an engineering marvel that brings fresh ideas to the phone and pocket camera markets.
