Both earthquakes struck near the coastal city of Morón, about 104 miles west of Caracas. Because they were shallow, the shaking was felt intensely across a wide area.

Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez reported at least 164 people killed and 971 injured. Dozens of buildings collapsed in La Guaira, and rescuers are searching rubble for survivors.
