An Air Canada pilot experienced a medical emergency during a flight from Newark, New Jersey to Halifax, Nova Scotia on Wednesday, leading passengers to help restrain him.

The incident occurred when the pilot reportedly suffered a seizure that lasted about 40 minutes, according to ABC News.

The plane took a sharp turn, alarming passengers.

The first officer took command of the aircraft and diverted to Boston, where it landed safely at Logan International Airport.

Passenger Rodney McDonald told ABC News that the sudden swerve did not feel like turbulence but rather as if someone had "jilted the controls."

McDonald said a flight attendant went into the cockpit and dragged the pilot onto the aisle while he was having a seizure.

McDonald and three other passengers then restrained the pilot until landing.

After landing, the captain was rushed to a hospital for treatment. His current condition is unknown.
