A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Japan on Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction and trapping multiple people inside a shopping mall.
The quake hit near Kumamoto on the southern island of Kyushu at around 4:30 PM local time.
The second floor of the Aeon Mall shopping center collapsed, trapping individuals inside.
Rescue operations are underway at the mall. Local reports indicate several thousand homes have lost power.
Images from the aftermath show buildings on fire, collapsed bridges, and derailed train cars lying on their sides.
A shopping center also exploded.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi warned of potential tsunamis of just over 3 feet near the Ariake and Yatsushiro seas.
She also cautioned that more quakes of similar magnitude could follow.
The tsunami warning was lifted around 6:10 PM local time.
