A terminally ill 12-year-old child has been euthanized in the Netherlands, marking the first case since the country legalized the practice for children aged 1 to 12 in 2024.
The unidentified minor died last year, according to Dutch outlet NOS.

The doctor involved will now be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service (OM) to determine if the procedure complied with the law.
Netherlands Minister of Health Sophie Hermans wrote in a legal letter that the case has been sent to the OM for assessment.

Euthanasia Regulations in the Netherlands
Voluntary euthanasia is allowed only for patients whose suffering is unbearable with no prospect of improvement and has a medical dimension.
The patient must explicitly request euthanasia and fully understand the consequences.

The government does not permit euthanasia for individuals who are simply "finished with life" or consider their life "completed."
