Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 series will feature 9GB of RAM in the standard models, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

This is a smaller increase than the 12GB previously rumored.

Kuo shared the details on X over the weekend, focusing on Apple's 2027 plans for more affordable iPhones.

The regular iPhone 18 and the rumored budget model, possibly called iPhone 18e, are expected to launch around March or April 2027.

Both devices will use six 1.5GB DRAM chips paired with Apple's A20 chipset.

This configuration marks a modest upgrade from the 8GB found in the current iPhone 17 base models.

Earlier rumors suggested a jump to 12GB to enable more complex on-device AI processing.

However, Kuo indicates that memory shortages and cost pressures led Apple to scale back and prioritize stability.

The A20 chip will be built on TSMC's advanced 2nm process.

It is expected to deliver about 15% better CPU performance and up to 30% improved power efficiency compared to the A19 series.

This should enhance daily performance, battery life, and the neural engine for future AI features.

In contrast, the higher-end iPhone 18 Pro models and Apple's first foldable (possibly called iPhone Ultra) will stick with a more premium configuration: 12GB of RAM and the A20 Pro chip.

These are still expected to launch in the usual fall 2026 window.

Kuo has a solid track record, so his insights carry weight, though plans may change before launch.

While some may be disappointed that standard models won't match the Pros in RAM, the more modest upgrade could help Apple keep prices lower for users who don't need the latest on-device AI capabilities.
