Hunt reported the incident to Mayor Tom Straight and the town council, suggesting that a council member might have been involved.

He noted that the council had previously expressed a desire to conduct an inventory of the department without officers present, and claimed a councilmember admitted to taking a set of police keys.

Hunt said he and the only other officer in Barrackville were placed on inactive status immediately. The police clerk has since resigned.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office will handle emergency calls for Barrackville in the interim. It remains unclear when the town council will move to fill the vacancies.
