TECNO has launched '100 Portraits of Becoming,' a two-year global initiative aimed at promoting fair representation in AI-powered imaging.

The project was unveiled on July 4, 2026, in Nairobi, Kenya, and will span Kenya, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Brazil.

The initiative is a collaboration with Brazilian-Spanish visual artist Angélica Dass, known for her Humanæ project that redefines skin tone representation.

Addressing AI Bias

As AI influences photography, concerns have grown over narrow beauty standards and inaccurate reproduction of darker skin tones.

TECNO aims to show that technology should help people be seen truthfully, not fit predefined categories.

TECNO General Manager Jack Guo emphasized that every image shapes public perception, making fair representation crucial in the AI era.

The project seeks to reduce bias, challenge stereotypes, and foster understanding.

Building a Living Archive

Participants register via a global website and have their portraits taken in natural light without beauty filters, wearing clothes of their choice.

They also share personal stories about their life journeys, cultural influences, and identity-shaping moments.

These stories become part of an online Living Archive, preserving diverse experiences and encouraging discussions on identity, dignity, and AI ethics.

The first portraits are expected online in early August 2026.

All portraits are captured using the TECNO CAMON 50 Ultra, featuring Universal Tone imaging technology.

Introduced in 2023, Universal Tone uses AI-powered full-spectrum skin tone imaging and supports accurate reproduction of 372 skin tones, reducing over-brightening or underexposure.

Kenya as the Starting Point

Kenya was chosen for its young population and thriving tech ecosystem, known as the 'Silicon Savannah.'

The first portraits feature entrepreneurs, farmers, artists, dancers, and creators, emphasizing that no one should be reduced to stereotypes.

Among the first participants is Alexander Odhiambo, co-founder of Solutech Limited, who believes people should have the freedom to write their own stories.

The initiative will then expand to the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Brazil, aiming to build a global archive of 100 unique journeys demonstrating how technology can help people be understood, not just seen.
