Google has provided more details about Android Halo, a new feature designed to improve communication between users and AI assistants on Android devices.
The announcement came during a recent video on Google's official developer YouTube channel, where Android President Sameer Samat discussed the feature around the 30-minute mark.

First previewed at Google I/O in May, Android Halo creates a dedicated spot in the phone's status bar for the user's chosen AI agent, whether that's Gemini or a compatible third-party one.
When the agent is working on a task, a subtle indicator appears, showing progress updates, asking quick follow-up questions, or displaying final results without requiring the user to open the app.
Samat explained that while AI agents are becoming proficient at handling multiple tasks autonomously, they still need human input at critical moments.
Halo serves as a dedicated channel for three main functions: asking clarifying questions, sharing updates, and presenting completed work.

"This is a dedicated location on the status bar where the user-selected agent can report updates to the user and receive the user's latest instructions for the current task queue," Samat said.
He described it as an interesting new direction for future interactions with intelligent systems.
By keeping AI activity visible and easily accessible, Halo aims to bring more transparency to background processes.

This approach makes AI agents feel less like mysterious black boxes and more like helpful partners, which could help build user trust.
The feature is expected to arrive later in 2026 with Android 17. It aligns with Google's broader Gemini plans and could work alongside other new AI capabilities.
While full details on rollout and supported devices are still pending, the goal is clear: make AI on Android feel more natural and integrated into daily use.
This development reflects the industry's move toward more proactive, agent-style AI.
