YouTube is updating its public view-counting system to count a view as soon as a video begins playing, starting August 24.

The change applies globally to long-form videos, Shorts, live streams, and all other content.

Previously, regular videos required about 30 seconds of watch time before the counter increased, while Shorts already counted views from the first frame.

YouTube says the update responds to creator feedback seeking a clearer, more unified metric for exposure.

Public view counts are expected to rise faster, especially for videos that receive brief attention.

The change will not affect advertising revenue or eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program.

YouTube will rename its older engagement-focused metric to "Engaged views," available in YouTube Analytics under Advanced Mode.

Earnings will continue to be based on engaged Shorts views and engaged watch hours.

Existing videos will keep their current public totals; only new plays after August 24 will follow the updated system.
