Craig Melvin addressed the shocking security breach on the "TODAY" show Friday, a day after a man bypassed security and lunged at the NBC host while shouting racial slurs.
During the broadcast, Melvin said the intruder was "thankfully" apprehended quickly. He added that he and his colleagues are fully cooperating with the NYPD as the investigation continues.
"We are just very happy everyone is safe," Melvin stated.
The incident occurred Thursday morning when a man stormed into the studio from the plaza.
Law enforcement sources told TMZ the individual originally planned to confront Al Roker but targeted Melvin after Roker was not present.
The suspect, identified as Andrew Truelove, has been arrested and faces multiple hate crime charges, including hate crime burglary, hate crime menacing, hate crime criminal trespass, and harassment.
Truelove has a lengthy criminal record, including a felony criminal mischief case involving damage to multiple vehicles.
The security guard who allowed Truelove to enter has reportedly been fired.
