Andrew Truelove, the man accused of storming the set of NBC's "TODAY" show, allegedly told police he had always wanted to call a Black famous person the N-word, according to an NYPD narrative.
Police say Truelove used the racial slur against host Craig Melvin during the incident Thursday morning at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
According to the NYPD, one witness saw Truelove enter the lobby and follow an employee into a restricted area.
Another individual, believed to be Melvin, reported seeing Truelove at the bottom of a stairwell, where he yelled Melvin's name and asked for Al Roker.
Officers said Truelove then approached the informant and used the racial slur.
When asked if that was what he wanted to get arrested for, Truelove allegedly replied, "I always wanted to call a Black famous person the N-word."
Truelove was arrested and charged with hate crime burglary, hate crime menacing, hate crime criminal trespass, and harassment.
NBC confirmed no one was injured.
Melvin addressed the incident on air Friday, saying the intruder was quickly apprehended and that the "TODAY" team is cooperating with authorities.
Truelove has a lengthy criminal history, including a felony conviction.
