A 51-year-old woman has died after undergoing six cosmetic procedures in a single eight-hour operation in Goiânia, Brazil.
Andreia Vieira Gaspar had saved 118,000 Brazilian reais, equivalent to about $22,918, over two years for the surgery, according to G1.
The procedures included a facelift, blepharoplasty, liposuction and facial fat grafting.
Gaspar, who had been living in Spain, died in the days after the procedure on August 12.
Sister Questions Pre-Operative Care
Her sister, Djiane Vieira, said Gaspar did not have a pre-procedure consultation and that her pre-operative tests were done in Spain, not Brazil.
Djiane said that after Gaspar's tongue began swelling severely, she tried to reach the doctor's medical team but did not receive proper care before it was too late.
She told G1, "My sister is dying. For God's sake.
You answer the phone, but nobody shows up. For God's sake."
She also claimed that the local Ankar Hospital did not have an ICU or an emergency ambulance.
According to Djiane, Gaspar died in her arms after multiple resuscitation attempts.
Dr. Lessandro Martins said in a legal statement that no interviews or comments on clinical data would be granted out of respect for medical confidentiality.
He added that he trusts the investigation will demonstrate the correctness of the care provided.
A lawyer representing Ankar Hospital said Gaspar "received immediate emergency care" and that "necessary measures were taken" to treat her.
