The Senate Homeland Security Committee voted Thursday to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress.
The vote came after Fauci refused to answer questions during a hearing last week, invoking his Fifth Amendment rights 111 times.
The 8-5 party-line vote sets up a potential criminal referral to the Department of Justice for allegedly ignoring a congressional subpoena.
However, a full Senate vote would require 60 votes, making the referral a long shot.
Fauci's legal troubles may not end there. Senator Rand Paul has repeatedly called for his prosecution and imprisonment.
House Oversight Chairman James Comer is also preparing to question Fauci about his previous testimony.
