Tony Romo is taking accountability for his actions after pleading no contest to an OWI charge in Wisconsin.
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback shared a vulnerable Instagram post on Tuesday, admitting he has an alcohol problem.
Romo described his situation as a "personal failure" and noted that multiple back surgeries ended his playing career early.
He said he developed a dependency on pain medication first, and while trying to get off the meds, he replaced it with alcohol.
"As I have told my three young sons: when you fall short, you stand up and take full responsibility," Romo wrote.
He added that the harder step is examining the path that brought him there and making changes to move forward.
Romo said he is working with a team of doctors and is grateful for support from family, friends, and the NFL community.
Tom Brady was among those who left heartfelt messages of support in the comments.
Court records show Romo's driving privileges are revoked for six months, and he must complete an alcohol assessment program.
An ignition interlock device will also be installed in his car.
