Xiaomi has opened pre-orders for the Smart Lock 5 Max in China, priced at 3,529 yuan, or about $495.

That places it far above cheaper options such as the Smart Door Lock 5C, which sells for under 700 yuan.

The lock uses a bridge-style design with an AG-finished panel, a glass handle, and a floating panel ringed by light.

Xiaomi says the look is meant to blend into a range of home interiors.

Palm vein and face recognition among 12 unlock methods

Unlocking is the main focus, with 12 methods offered in total, including 3D face recognition and palm vein recognition.

The 3D face system supports users between 1.2 and 2 meters tall and can open the door in roughly one second.

Palm vein recognition works at a distance of 10 to 20cm.

Xiaomi says it can be used by children over 1.1 meters tall, as well as older family members who may struggle with fingerprint sensors.

A built-in 192-degree 2K camera adds dynamic night vision.

Inside, a 5-inch display lets users see outside without opening the door.

Xiaomi also applies a large AI model to the camera feed, which can tell whether someone is standing at the door or just walking past.

The system can detect when a package has been left outside.

It sends alerts if the door is left open or if someone tries to force the lock, and it supports intercom features for use with other devices in Xiaomi's smart home ecosystem.

Power comes from two 8,000mAh batteries, rated for up to 11 months of normal use.

When the battery drops below 10%, the lock enters a power-saving mode that keeps basic unlocking available for another 2.5 months before the batteries need refilling.
