Apple's first foldable iPhone is reportedly close to launch, and speculation is heating up over its official name.
Recent rumors have floated 'iPhone Duo' as a possible contender, joining earlier theories like 'iPhone Ultra' and 'iPhone Fold.'
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has noted that many inside Apple casually refer to the device as the iPhone Ultra, but he cautions that this may not be the final marketing name.
MacRumors now suggests 'Duo' could be in the running, though there's no confirmation it's the chosen name.
Why 'Duo' Makes Sense
Apple has used 'Duo' before, with the PowerBook Duo laptops in the 1990s and the MagSafe Duo charger more recently.
The name could reference the two screens that fold together like a book.
However, 'Duo' carries baggage: Microsoft's Surface Duo and Intel's Core Duo processors might make Apple hesitant.
The Case for 'Ultra' and 'Fold'
Samsung already uses 'Ultra' and 'Fold' for its Galaxy devices, so those names wouldn't feel original.
Yet 'Ultra' fits Apple's premium naming scheme, seen in Apple Watch Ultra, CarPlay Ultra, and M5 Ultra chips.
Calling the foldable 'iPhone Ultra' would position it above the Pro models without inventing a new word.
Apple's fall event is expected on September 9, under the theme 'Surprise and Shine,' where the foldable might debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.
The device is rumored to be a book-style foldable that opens sideways, not a clamshell.
Until Apple announces the official name, it's all speculation based on leaks and internal nicknames.
