Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced Friday that Nashville International Airport will be renamed in honor of the late country music icon Dolly Parton.
The proposal comes after an outpouring of public support for the measure, according to Lee's office.

"Dolly Parton's extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state," Lee said in a statement.
"From her rural mountain home in East Tennessee to global stages, Dolly carried the Volunteer Spirit with her."

Lee added, "At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state's favorite daughter and greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly's music, generosity, faith, and kindness."

Parton, a Tennessee native, died from cancer Tuesday at a Nashville hospital. She was 80.

Lee has already begun discussions with Parton's team about the renaming, noting they were appreciative of the public support and open to further talks.
