A teenager driving a BMW crashed into an NYPD patrol car in The Bronx, causing the police vehicle to overturn and burst into flames, authorities said.
The incident occurred early Friday morning on the Bruckner Expressway, according to the New York Police Department.

Police identified the driver as 19-year-old Gamal Ali, who was behind the wheel of a burgundy BMW when he slammed into the rear of the police cruiser.
The impact flipped the patrol car, which somehow landed back on its wheels, police said.

The cruiser then caught fire, but the two officers inside managed to escape before suffering serious injuries.

The New York Fire Department said sixteen firefighters responded and quickly extinguished the blaze.
Both officers were taken to a hospital and listed in stable condition.

Ali was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and operating a motor vehicle without a license.
