A 31-year-old Illinois mother died after saving her 7-year-old son from a river on Sunday evening.
Angelina Khalimendik was fishing with her three children at Independence Grove Forest Preserve when her youngest son was swept into the Des Plaines River.

Officials say she jumped in and helped the boy reach another family member, but then went underwater herself.
A relative and bystanders pulled her from the river and performed CPR before paramedics took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The coroner said her death was consistent with drowning.

Police noted that recent storms made the river deeper and rougher than usual, with hidden debris like fallen trees and rocks.
Investigators believe the drowning was a tragic accident.

Angelina's husband was out of town for work when the incident happened. She leaves behind an 11-year-old daughter and two sons, including a 9-year-old.
