Jorge Messi, the father and longtime agent of soccer superstar Lionel Messi, has died. He was 68 years old.

Newell's Old Boys, the famous Argentine club from Rosario, announced the news on social media Saturday.

The club mourned him as a "pillar" who, alongside his wife Celia Cuccittini, fiercely supported one of the greatest soccer players ever.

The club's translated message read: "His constant companionship and behind-the-scenes leadership were essential in backing every step of Lionel, from his beginnings at Malvinas to the pinnacle of world football glory."

Jorge passed away Friday at a clinic in Rosario, according to ESPN. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

He had been experiencing health issues recently.

During the FIFA World Cup this summer, the Messi family corrected reports about his condition, confirming he was under medical care and recovering favorably.

In June, Lionel was seen crying after scoring a goal against Algeria in Argentina's opening match of the 2026 World Cup.

He scored a hat trick in that 3-0 win.

Later, he explained his tears were not about soccer but related to "difficult, complicated days." His family's statement came after that interview.

Jorge played a crucial role in shaping Lionel's career, from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain and now Inter Miami.
