Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife, Cherelle, after eight years of marriage.
The WNBA star submitted the divorce petition on Thursday, listing July 24 as the date of separation.

In the filing, Griner states that the marriage is "irretrievably broken." The couple shares one child together.
Brittney and Cherelle married in June 2018. They remained together during the 10 months Brittney spent in a Russian prison.

Griner is requesting joint legal custody of their child. She is also asking the court to determine child support, if any.
While Brittney excels on the basketball court, Cherelle is an attorney.

She was a leading advocate for Brittney's release from Russia in late 2022, after Brittney was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison on marijuana charges.
Cherelle previously told People magazine that she felt "hopeless" during Brittney's imprisonment. She also described their tearful reunion.
