DJI has introduced its first standalone parachute system for enterprise drones, the AP100 Parachute, designed specifically for the Matrice 400.

The system aims to reduce risks during flight by enabling a controlled descent in case of malfunction.

As businesses increasingly use heavy drones like the Matrice 400 for inspections, public safety, surveying, and cargo delivery in populated areas, the AP100 provides a reliable recovery option.

An uncontrolled fall from such a drone could cause serious damage, especially with a heavy payload.

Lightweight and weather-resistant design

The AP100 weighs approximately 935 grams including the bracket, which minimally affects the Matrice 400's 15.8 kg maximum takeoff weight.

It reduces flight time by only about six minutes even when fully loaded.

The system is compact, weather-resistant with an IP55 rating, and operates in temperatures from -20°C to 50°C at altitudes up to 4,500 meters.

Fast deployment and smart features

DJI states the system can detect a problem, cut motor power via an independent Flight Termination System, and fully deploy the parachute in under 600 milliseconds.

From a height of 30 meters or higher in calm conditions, it slows the drone to less than 5 m/s, significantly reducing the chance of major damage or injury.

The parachute has its own independent flight controller, backup power lasting up to an hour, and smart systems to avoid unnecessary deployments.

After landing, it triggers an audible and visual alarm to aid recovery. Batteries can be swapped without removing the parachute, and it fits in the standard carrying case.

Regulatory compliance and pricing

Pairing the AP100 with the Matrice 400 helps meet strict European regulations (EASA C5/C6) and UK CAA standards.

This could enable operations over populated areas and beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS).

The AP100 is priced at around $1,050, a relatively small investment compared to the Matrice 400's cost, often over $10,000.

It is available through DJI Enterprise distributors.
