Apple's Mac Studio lineup has a clear roadmap for the next few years, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

While the upcoming update is expected to be a straightforward hardware refresh, a future version could bring significant internal improvements.

M5 Ultra Mac Studio Expected Later This Year

Gurman reports that Apple is preparing to launch a Mac Studio powered by the M5 Ultra chip in 2026.

The new model is likely to retain the current chassis, focusing on performance gains from the new processor rather than a redesign.

The current Mac Studio lineup pairs the M4 Max with the older M3 Ultra chip, making the high-end variant due for an update.

Interestingly, Gurman's report only mentions the M5 Ultra version, with no word on an M5 Max variant.

Major Upgrade with M7 Ultra in 2028

Looking further ahead, Apple is already planning another Mac Studio refresh for 2028 featuring the M7 Ultra chip.

Earlier reports suggest Apple may skip M6 Pro, Max, and Ultra processors, reserving advanced AI-focused silicon for the M7 generation.

The 2028 model is expected to include internal hardware changes, such as a redesigned heatsink for better thermal performance during intensive professional workloads and on-device AI processing.

While a refreshed exterior is possible, Gurman notes that Apple typically keeps desktop designs unchanged for several years.
