President Donald Trump unleashed a blistering attack on his former national security adviser, John Bolton, after Bolton pleaded guilty to mishandling classified documents.

In a Truth Social post Friday night, Trump called Bolton "a very dumb, unbalanced, and unskilled former representative of the United States of America."

He continued, "He is a terrible person, a lunatic who only wanted to start trouble and wars, and who was a needless pusher of death and destruction wherever he went."

Bolton pleaded guilty to willfully retaining national defense information, using personal accounts to send classified material to family members without authorization.

He now awaits sentencing. Trump demanded the matter be handled "harshly."

Bolton faces up to 60 months in prison and has been ordered to pay a $2.25 million fine.

He and his family are also barred from collecting federal retirement pay.

Bolton's lawyer defended him, saying he showed "real leadership" by taking responsibility.

The lawyer also took a swipe at Trump, stating, "Ambassador Bolton kept a diary to preserve history, but Donald Trump kept secrets to serve himself."
