Hayden Panettiere was reportedly struggling to stay sober while filming one of her final movies, and her director says her team discussed staging an intervention.
Griff Furst, who directed Panettiere in the 2025 film 'A Breed Apart,' said she was 'fighting to stay sober' during production.
Furst claimed her team reached out to him about participating in an intervention, and he agreed to be involved.
However, to his knowledge, the intervention never actually took place.
The director also recalled Panettiere bringing her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, to the set, and he expressed concerns about the company she kept.
Furst said Panettiere 'deserved better company' and described a 'dark energy' surrounding the situation, while also praising her as an incredible talent.
Panettiere died Sunday at age 36 after being found unresponsive in a Greenville, South Carolina Airbnb.
Brian Hickerson was sleeping in another room when his brother, Zach Hickerson, found her, and first responders could not revive her.
Her official cause and manner of death have not been determined.
Furst's account paints a heartbreaking picture: those around Panettiere apparently knew she was struggling and considered stepping in, but the intervention never came.
