Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips have long dominated the performance race against Tensor.

With the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the gap remains wide, but Google's focus on AI and photography offers a different value.

Spec Sheet Comparison

Both chips are built on TSMC's 3nm process.

The Tensor G6 features a 1+4+2 CPU setup with a 4.11 GHz prime core, while the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 uses a 2+6 configuration with a 4.61 GHz prime core.

The GPU differs significantly: Tensor G6 uses PowerVR CXTP-48-1536, while Snapdragon has the Adreno 840. Both support ray tracing, but Snapdragon's Elite Gaming features are more extensive.

For AI, Tensor G6 relies on its 5th-gen TPU, while Snapdragon uses the Hexagon NPU.

Memory and storage support are similar: LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0/4.1.

Camera capabilities differ: Tensor G6 supports up to 200MP single camera and 4K portrait video, while Snapdragon handles up to 320MP and 8K video at 60fps.

Connectivity includes 5G modems, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6.0 on both.

Benchmark Results

In Geekbench 6, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 scores 3726 single-core and 11402 multi-core, outperforming Tensor G6's 2671 and 6802 by 39% and 67% respectively.

AnTuTu v11 shows a massive gap: Snapdragon scores 3.9 million versus Tensor's 1.8 million, a 110% difference.

The GPU subscore is 263% higher on Snapdragon.

In 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test, Snapdragon achieves 7738 overall with 46.34 fps, while Tensor G6 gets 3386 and 20.31 fps.

That's over 128% higher score and double the frame rate.

Google acknowledges that Tensor chips aren't built for benchmark wins.

Instead, they focus on heterogeneous computing, where CPU, GPU, ISP, and TPU work together for efficient task execution.

The TPU powers Pixel's AI features like Live Translate, Magic Eraser, and Real Tone. This on-device intelligence is a key differentiator from Snapdragon's raw performance approach.

If you prioritize raw power and sustained gaming, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is the clear winner.
