OpenAI has officially entered the hardware space, but its debut product is not the screenless AI companion many expected.
Instead, the company introduced the Codex Micro, a compact keypad designed for developers using its Codex AI coding platform.
The device was created in partnership with keyboard maker Work Louder and is now available for pre-order.
Designed for Codex Users
The Codex Micro is a programmable macro keypad that streamlines interactions with Codex agents.
It features 13 mechanical keys, including six illuminated Agent Keys that display the status of active AI agents using different colors.
Users can assign Command Keys for actions like accepting or rejecting code suggestions, starting new chats, voice input, or switching tasks.
A rotary dial adjusts Codex's reasoning effort, while a joystick can be mapped to workflows such as debugging or code refactoring.
The keypad ships with 32 interchangeable keycaps for customization. It supports Bluetooth and USB-C connectivity and works with Windows and macOS.
OpenAI says the keypad targets users who spend significant time with Codex, especially after the platform expanded beyond coding into a broader AI productivity tool.
The Codex Micro is priced at $230 and sold in limited quantities through OpenAI and Work Louder.
Separate from Rumored Consumer Device
While the Codex Micro marks OpenAI's first commercial hardware, it is distinct from the consumer AI device rumored in recent weeks.
According to Bloomberg, OpenAI is still working on a portable, screenless AI companion with former Apple design chief Jony Ive's startup, io Products.
That product is expected later and could offer conversational AI, smart home controls, and media playback.
