OnePlus has confirmed that its upcoming OnePlus 16 will feature a "global 165Hz ultra-high refresh rate," according to OnePlus China President Li Jie.

The phone will also be the first to run ColorOS 17, marking a significant display upgrade over the OnePlus 15.

The announcement aligns with leaks from tipster Digital Chat Station, who has been teasing the feature since last month.

Unlike the OnePlus 15, the OnePlus 16 is expected to support 165Hz across the system and regular apps, not just selected games.

What the OnePlus 15 Got Wrong

The OnePlus 15 launched with a 165Hz display, but it had a major limitation.

Outside a small number of supported games, the screen generally ran at up to 120Hz.

OnePlus later added 165Hz support for apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, and X via a software update.

However, users had to enable it through Developer Options, and the setting forced the screen to stay at 165Hz constantly, preventing adaptive refresh rate adjustments.

As a result, the OnePlus 15 never offered a true system-wide 165Hz mode.

How the OnePlus 16 Improves

According to leaks, the OnePlus 16 will use new Oriental Screen X4 display material and updated circuitry.

These changes are said to provide hardware-level support for the global 165Hz refresh rate.

Early testing reportedly showed 165Hz working in system apps and apps downloaded from the Play Store.

Digital Chat Station also shared a settings screen where the 165Hz option appears directly in normal display settings, so users won't need Developer Options.

OnePlus has not announced the exact launch date for the OnePlus 16 yet.
