At least 10 people died and 64 others were injured when a fireworks explosion erupted during a religious festival in central Mexico.

The blast occurred Saturday night in Santa María Canchesdá, State of Mexico, during celebrations honoring Our Lady of Light.

Pyrotechnic material stored near the church ignited, causing part of a structure and a wall to collapse and trap victims underneath.

Two priests were among the injured, and children and elderly people were also taken to hospitals.

Emergency crews searched the wreckage for hours and transported the wounded for treatment.

Authorities are investigating what caused the fireworks to explode.

What was meant to be a night of religious celebration turned into a mass-casualty disaster.
