Erik and Lyle Menendez will have their next parole suitability hearing earlier than expected, now tentatively scheduled for March 2027.
The California Board of Parole granted the advancement, moving the date up from August 2028 by more than a year.
The brothers were resentenced after originally receiving life without parole for the 1989 murders of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez.
Under California's parole process, certain factors can be considered when deciding whether to advance an inmate's next hearing date.
The Menendez family is celebrating the decision, saying in a statement that for almost 40 years, Erik and Lyle have worked to take responsibility for their actions.
They also highlighted the brothers' efforts to confront and heal from the abuse and trauma they endured, and to dedicate themselves to serving others.
The family pointed to their work behind bars, including helping establish a hospice program and creating Green Space.
These efforts, they said, have helped build an environment reminding people serving life sentences that their lives still have meaning.
The resentencing has also allowed the brothers to imagine a future where they can be part of their family's everyday lives again.
The family says the latest decision brings them immeasurable joy as they move closer to a future with Erik and Lyle that once seemed impossible.
They expressed being incredibly proud of the men they have become and deeply grateful to the Parole Board for recognizing their efforts.
The March 2027 hearing will determine whether the brothers are suitable for parole, but the advancement does not guarantee their release.
Both brothers were denied parole in August 2025, months after they were resentenced.
