Vivo is expanding its innovative Atomic Workbench feature to the upcoming X500 series, bringing a desktop-like multitasking experience to standard smartphones.
Product manager Han Boxiao shared details on Weibo, explaining that the feature allows users to keep up to five apps open and visible on a single screen at once.
This enables smoother switching between tasks, such as viewing a report, email, messages, and a research tab simultaneously.
Technical challenges and solutions
Han noted that no other Android brand has implemented this yet due to significant technical demands.
Vivo developed a multi-level dependency scheduling system to allocate processing power with fine precision, deviating from Android's typical foreground-priority approach.
Memory management was reworked, and deep collaboration with MediaTek's Dimensity platform ensures more apps remain active under heavy load.
The display system also required rewriting compositing logic to enable parallel multi-window rendering via the GPU.
Han admitted this is just the beginning, as deep framework changes mean each major Android update requires extensive adaptation, increasing long-term costs.
Despite this, Vivo is committed to maintaining the feature for user benefit.
The X500 series will also support interruptible first-frame interactions, allowing swipes and taps to register without waiting for previous animations to finish.
This is achieved through a more accurate touch-response system and a rebuilt app-switching scheduler that prioritizes touch commands.
By bringing Atomic Workbench to regular X500 phones, Vivo aims to offer a more practical and responsive multitasking experience than competitors.
