Xiaomi has begun selling its first network-attached storage (NAS) device, the Xiaomi Smart Storage, in China. The device comes with WD Red Plus drives pre-installed.
The base model offers 4TB of storage (two 2TB drives) and costs 2,699 yuan ($401).

An 8TB version is available for 3,499 yuan ($520), and a 16TB version for 5,499 yuan ($818).
For future expansion, the NAS supports up to 60TB of total storage if you replace the drives with two 30TB units.
Hardware and Connectivity
The device is an aluminum box with an active cooling fan.
It runs on 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage for the operating system and local processing.
Ports include a 2.5GbE Ethernet port, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI 1.4 port.

The HDMI output allows direct connection to a TV or monitor for 4K video playback at 30Hz.
This feature eliminates the need for a separate streaming box when watching stored media.
Software Integration and Smart Home Hub
The NAS integrates deeply with Xiaomi's ecosystem.
On Xiaomi phones running HyperOS 3.0 or newer, it appears automatically in the file manager and supports full device backups, including app data like WeChat histories.
It also connects to compatible Xiaomi security cameras, allowing local video recording from up to four cameras simultaneously.
As a local hub for Mi Home, it processes smart home automations locally, which Xiaomi claims results in faster response times compared to cloud-based processing.

The software includes media management tools similar to those from established NAS makers.
A photo app uses local processing to group pictures by faces and locations, and supports text searches.
For videos, the system automatically fetches movie posters, titles, and ratings based on file names.
Remote access is available through dedicated apps for iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows. Xiaomi provides up to 40Mbps of free remote bandwidth for streaming or file downloads.
The system supports up to 16 user accounts, allowing multiple family members to back up their devices privately.

The Xiaomi Smart Storage comes with a three-year warranty. There is no word yet on availability outside China.
