Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has agreed to pay $16.7 billion to resolve a major social media addiction lawsuit.
The settlement addresses claims that the platforms were designed to addict children, contributing to a nationwide mental health crisis.

Under the agreement, Meta will introduce daily limits and nighttime blocks for teenage users, along with enhanced age assurance measures.
The company will also implement safeguards to help parents protect their children online, according to court filings.

The settlement, which requires judicial approval, comes a day after Instagram head Adam Mosseri testified in California.
Meta has denied the allegations but settled to avoid potential penalties exceeding $1 trillion.

This follows a series of legal setbacks for Meta, including a $375 million jury verdict in New Mexico and an additional $567 million ordered by a judge.
In March, a Los Angeles jury also held Meta and Google liable for a woman's anxiety and depression, awarding $6 million in damages.
