Apple's next entry-level earbuds have surfaced in software code, indicating development is underway.

According to MacRumors, the macOS 26.7 Tahoe update includes two internal device codes: B868M and B868E.

These codes closely match those used for the AirPods 4 (B768M and B768E), which launched in September 2024.

The similar naming strongly suggests the AirPods 5 and a version with active noise cancellation.

Expected H3 Chip and Features

Reports indicate the AirPods 5 will feature Apple's new H3 chip.

This upgrade is expected to deliver better sound quality and lower latency compared to the H2 chip in the AirPods 4 and recent Pro models.

For context, the AirPods 4 offers up to 5 hours of listening on a single charge, 4 hours with ANC enabled, and around 30 hours total with the case.

The higher-end AirPods Pro 3, launched last year, also uses the H2 chip.

It provides 8 hours of continuous playback with ANC on and about 24 hours total with the case, along with a sealed in-ear design and stronger noise cancellation.

The same macOS update also mentions an unreleased Beats Solo Buds model, showing Apple's continued work on the Beats brand.

Software references like these are typical for Apple and often appear months before official announcements.

The B868 codes are the clearest sign yet that work on the regular AirPods lineup is progressing.
