Krafton India has officially confirmed that Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) Lite is in development and will launch by the end of 2026.

The announcement answers long-standing requests from the Indian mobile gaming community, which has awaited a lighter version since the main game's return.

The real reason behind this move is not just about offering a new variant; it's about addressing a recent decline in budget smartphone gaming performance.

For years, the standard BGMI ran smoothly on most mid-range and budget Android devices.

However, the smartphone market has hit a bottleneck due to the industry's focus on AI-specific silicon and rising memory and RAM prices.

As a result, current budget-tier phones often deliver worse raw gaming performance than models from a couple of years ago.

This hardware regression makes a Lite version a practical necessity rather than just an expansion of the game's portfolio.

Before the 2020 ban on apps with Chinese ties, PUBG Mobile Lite was hugely popular in India, serving players with entry-level hardware.

When Krafton relaunched the main game as BGMI, the Lite version was left out, as budget phones were becoming more capable.

That is no longer the case, prompting Krafton to bring back a lighter version.

In its announcement, Krafton kept specifics vague, only stating that the game will arrive by the end of 2026 and aims to make BGMI accessible to a wider community.

Details on graphical compromises, map size reductions, or gameplay tweaks will be shared closer to launch.

Launching BGMI Lite is a straightforward retention strategy for Krafton.

As the cost of decent gaming hardware rises, Krafton needs to keep its large Indian player base engaged without requiring phone upgrades.

It is a pragmatic response to a smartphone market that has temporarily sacrificed budget gaming performance for AI features and component costs.
