MediaTek has quietly introduced the Dimensity 8550, a 4nm mobile processor that adds support for Google's Gemini Nano V3 AI.
However, the chip's core specifications remain nearly identical to its predecessor, the Dimensity 8500.

The Dimensity 8550 features MediaTek's NPU 880 with a new LLM Booster, enabling on-device AI processing without an internet connection.
It officially supports Gemini Nano V3, but that alone does not guarantee full Gemini Intelligence on every phone.
As previously reported, Gemini Intelligence requires at least 12GB of RAM, 50% more than Apple Intelligence's 8GB minimum, along with Gemini Nano V3 support and a flagship-grade chipset.

A phone with the Dimensity 8550 and 8GB of RAM will not meet the requirement.
Specifications and First Devices
Beyond AI, the Dimensity 8550 is built on TSMC's 4nm process with eight Cortex-A725 cores: one lead core at 3.4GHz, three at 3.2GHz, and four at 2.2GHz.

The Mali-G720 MC8 GPU supports 1440p displays at up to 144Hz.
Video capabilities include 4K recording at 60fps and AV1 playback.
The chip supports cameras up to 320MP, 5G with dual SIM dual active, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, LPDDR5X RAM at 9,600Mbps, and UFS 4.0 storage.

The first smartphones with the Dimensity 8550 are already available. Honor launched the Honor 600 Pro, and Oppo announced the Reno 16, both powered by this chip.
