A fatal attack struck Berlin's LGBTQ+ Pride parade on Saturday, leaving one person dead and 16 others injured, police reported.
The incident occurred when a car plowed into a crowd near Tiergarten, Berlin's central park, along the parade route.
The driver fled the scene and remains at large.
Authorities identified the alleged perpetrator as 21-year-old Abdul Ballout, who is believed to have links to an Islamic extremist group.
Some victims suffered life-threatening injuries, and others had stab wounds.
Emergency responders, including firefighters and paramedics, provided medical aid. The parade was canceled following the attack.
Official Response
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner condemned the violence, stating, "Following a peaceful and vibrant pride parade, the rally for a tolerant and peaceful Berlin was attacked in the most brutal manner."
He called it an assault on the city's free and cosmopolitan society.
Hundreds of thousands had attended the event, one of Europe's largest LGBTQ+ celebrations. Police continue to search for the suspect.
