A new judge has been assigned to oversee the ongoing proceedings in Karmelo Anthony's murder case, as his new lawyer calls foul on the trial judge.

Judge Sid L. Harle was assigned to the case Tuesday, according to court records obtained by WFAA.

Harle will preside over Karmelo's motion to recuse trial Judge John Roach from handling post-trial proceedings.

Karmelo's new attorney, Russell Wilson, is blasting the trial judge, claiming Roach made comments after the conviction that showed he could not be fair and unbiased.

Wilson also alleges that "gentleman's agreements" between attorneys about admissible testimony were not fully followed.

He says this impacted Karmelo's decision not to testify and therefore affected the trial's outcome.

However, Collin County First Assistant District Attorney Bill Wirskye told WFAA that Karmelo's defense team submitted "inaccurate characterizations of the trial proceedings."

He stated the entire prosecution team "conducted this trial ethically and in full compliance with the Court's rulings and any agreements with defense counsel."

Judge Harle will ultimately decide whether Karmelo gets a new judge and a new trial.

Karmelo was convicted of murder last month and is currently serving 35 years in prison for fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a 2025 Texas high school track meet.
