Chinese AI company StepX has unveiled the StepX Neo, which it calls the world's first mass-market agentic smartphone.

Unlike conventional AI features that require manual activation across multiple apps, the Neo's built-in AI agent can execute complex, multi-step tasks from a single natural language request.

The device runs on Step AOS, a custom agent operating system developed by StepX.

The operating system integrates the StepX Agent directly into the phone's core, enabling it to function fully offline for all primary tasks without constant network connectivity.

How the Agent Works

The Step AOS is built on an atomic capability engine that splits the phone's functions into four groups: communication, apps, files, and system tools.

Using the MCP standard, the agent can freely combine these capabilities to complete tasks end-to-end.

The system also includes a voice-and-vision input layer called NUI, which learns user habits over time.

StepX describes this as a shift from "humans operating a device" to "simply stating what you want done."

To ensure trustworthiness, StepX built three supporting systems: Memory, which separates user data from agent data; Decision-making, which routes simple requests to small models and complex ones to heavier models; and Security, which includes trusted execution, audit trails, and one-tap undo for mistakes.

On-Device AI and Integrations

Powering the Neo is Step Edge, a foundation model designed to run within a phone's compute limits. StepX claims it leads comparable edge models across 29 benchmarks.

Step Edge is part of the company's broader "1+N" model lineup, which has been in development since April 2023.

The Neo also integrates with popular services including Ctrip, Alipay, Didi, Meituan, WPS, and CapCut, covering travel, payments, ride-hailing, local services, office work, and content creation.

These integrations allow the agent to perform real-world tasks like booking a ride or editing a video autonomously.
