Xiaomi has confirmed the design of its upcoming foldable, the Xiaomi 18 Fold, ahead of its September 7 launch event.

The company released an official video showcasing the device, which it calls a 'mid-fold' phone.

The Xiaomi 18 Fold features a 5.38-inch cover display and a 7.58-inch main display.

The video shows the phone in red, with a horizontal camera strip housing three cameras and an LED flash.

Xiaomi also confirmed Leica's involvement in developing the camera system.

What is 'mid-fold' design?

Xiaomi says the mid-fold design aims to solve a common issue with large foldables.

Users often spend most time on the smaller outer screen, while smaller foldables compromise on experience.

The Xiaomi 18 Fold sits between them, offering a passport-sized folded form and a 7.58-inch display when opened.

The main display uses a new aspect ratio optimized for multitasking and video watching.

Lu Weibing, head of Xiaomi's smartphone business, describes the 18 Fold as the most advanced flagship in Xiaomi's lineup.

He believes the mid-fold design could become a common direction for future foldables.

The phone will run on Xiaomi's Xring O3 chip, which recently appeared on Geekbench.

It will ship with Surge OS 4 and Xiaomi's MiMo on-device AI model.

Xiaomi has introduced a new 'dragon bone' hinge and a simulation-based testing system for the foldable.

The 18 Fold will be one of the first phones to use CXMT's new LPDDR6 memory.

At the September 7 event, Xiaomi will also launch the N70 Pro, N70 Max, N90 Max, and Pad 9 Pro Max.
