Irfan Pathan, a former India left-arm bowler, thinks that the 2016 IPL champions, Sunrisers Hyderabad, will try to sign opener Mayank Agarwal during Friday’s IPL 2023 Player Auction in Kochi. For IPL 2022, Agarwal will captain the Punjab Kings, and the team has paid him a hefty INR 12 crores to stay.
After joining the Punjab squad in 2018, Agarwal quickly became a formidable opening partner for KL Rahul, who led the team as captain till 2021. Even after being elevated to a leadership role, the right-hander still struggled at the plate in IPL 2022.
Even though he played in 13 games, Agarwal only managed to score 196 runs (16.33 runs per game). Punjab finished the season in the sixth position on the points table out of a possible ten teams, hence his leadership skills were clearly lacking.
After Shikhar Dhawan was named the new captain of the Punjab Kings and the decision was made to release Agarwal in November, the latter found himself without a team. Following the departures of Kane Williamson and Nicholas Pooran, Hyderabad is in need of a top-order batsman who can also lead the team as captain.
“For this reason, SRH will pursue Mayank Agarwal, who can serve as a rough opener. They are now missing veteran leader and batting opener Kane Williamson.”
“Mayank Agarwal is an inspirational leader because he has led a team and because he plays without fear or selfishness. They could be considering him for future leadership roles.
Well, we shall see what transpires, but rest assured that such an introduction will be sought for in that auction “according to Pathan’s comments on Star Sports’ “Game Plan” (along with an auction special).
With a total of INR 42.25 crores, Hyderabad has the most budget among the 10 IPL clubs heading into the auction. The state of Punjab is in second place, with INR 32.2 crores. Pathan also believes that Hyderabad and Punjab will engage in a bidding war for Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa.
In his opinion, “both Punjab Kings and SRH will show their masses at the auction because, look, one thing for sure that when we don’t have a settled unit when you don’t have a proper playing eleven which Punjab and SRH don’t have, that means they have a big bank balance and that means they need to be very smart.”
They need to bid aggressively in these auctions because they have the muscle to do so; I expect that they will immediately target Adam Zampa.
No teams from Hyderabad or Punjab made it to the IPL 2022 playoffs. When the dust settled, Hyderabad landed in eighth place with 12 points, while Punjab climbed to sixth with 14.
