FIFA World Cup 2022: Matchday 3 Outcomes

The Round of 16 matches is in full swing in Qatar with football stars all lined up to clinch the ultimate glory while making their way out of the knockout stages

The match between Japan and Croatia was slated for December 5 at 8:30 PM IST at Al Janoub Stadium.

Brazil vs. South Korea took place at Stadium 974 on December 6 at 12:30 IST.

THE RESULTS

Japan 1, Croatia 1 (Croatia wins 3-1 in shootout) in Al Wakrah

Brazil 4, South Korea 1 in Doha

Brazil powers its way into the quarterfinals.

The players from Brazil started dancing early and often. After each goal, precisely four times, with each celebration sequence showcasing more complex choreography than the one before it. On the spotless grass field inside Doha’s Stadium 974, a celebration broke out on  Monday as the Brazilians danced their way to a 4-1 victory over South Korea.

Brazil looked flawless against South Korea

Up until this point, Brazil hadn’t really taken off in Qatar. Undoubtedly, they occasionally displayed their “Joga bonito” for which they are widely known. However, those moments were fleeting and infrequent.

Eventually, the grand South Americans provided what the people wanted to see, not just their fans but also allies around the world: A typical Brazilian victory that showcased the team’s best offensive traits and capacity to score very artistic goals.

Each goal, with the exception of Neymar’s penalty kick conversion, was a work of art, rhythmic and brutal at the same time since the South Koreans had no idea how to halt the Brazilian wave. After being set up by the fiery Vinicius Junior, Lucas Paquetá’s fourth goal for Brazil effectively ended the match in the 36th minute. After losing to Cameroon 1-0 in the final group stage match, some minor concerns regarding Brazil’s reputation as the title favourites started to surface. However, boss Tite fielded a “B squad,” resting his best players as they had already qualified for the knockout round. In this match, the Brazilian coach showed no mercy as forced 10 changes in his starting team and took the best players off the bench, such as the seasoned Neymar, who missed the previous two games due to an ankle injury.

Brazil delivered one of the most overpowering displays at the Tournament in recent times, reminding the opposition that they are indomitable and a force to reckon with.

Perisic inspires Croatia past Round Of 16

After securing a 1-0 lead at the 43rd-minute mark of Monday’s match, Japan appeared to be going to continue roaring its way through this World Cup like a storm. The Blue Samurais had their eyes set on Croatia after upsetting the mighty Germans and Spain in the group phase. Ivan Perisic, who scored the equaliser early in the second half to bring his nation back into the game, had other plans. After a tiresome 120 minutes of regulation and overtime, the Croatians eventually prevailed via a penalty shootout in a 3-1 result.

A delighted Croatian team

Dejan Lovren attempted a hopeful cross into Japan’s penalty box for Perisic with Croatia desperately needing an equaliser. The Croatian attacker was about 14 yards from the goal, but he still managed to produce enough force with his header for it to slip past the sprawled Shuichi Gonda in the Japanese goal.

Perisic has now scored more goals than any other Croatian player for the men’s squad at World Cups and European Championships (10). Amazingly, since making his World Cup debut in 2014, the Tottenham player has contributed to 10 goals in 14 games (six goals and four assists). Only Leo Messi (eight goals and four assists) and France’s Mbappé (nine goals and two assists) have been more successful in the tournament during the same time period.
