It’s awful to leave a franchise on bad terms. It is worst to criticize former coworkers and management after leaving. It probably justifies demands for one’s head to hurt the face of one’s former franchise at one’s former home arena.
This is exactly how Shaquille O’Neal’s relationship with the Miami Heat played out. Everything progressed smoothly after a coming together that caught the league’s interest until they suddenly stopped.
The Heat had the poorest record in the NBA when O Neal was traded to the Phoenix Suns. This was made much more frightening by the fact that they had recently won the title. But things quickly started to deteriorate. Shaq recounted the circumstance in great detail and described the hostility he encountered.

I was t expecting a parade or another key to the city. They booed the crap out of me, which was what I figured would happen. At one point in the game DWade drove to the hole, so naturally, I knocked him on his back and stood over him. At Miami, the animosity wasn’t uncalled for. Despite his prominence, O Neal did make certain remarks that undoubtedly alienated his supporters. He may have reached his peak of apparent Heat regret by taking out DWade. But calling outperforming teammates Chris Quinn and Ricky Davis, for example, as well as the lack of quality Miami had around him, undoubtedly set off problems.
After O Neal left, not even The Godfather Pat Riley was exempt from criticism. All of these elements worked together to sabotage what would have otherwise been a successful partnership between athlete and franchise. Fairytale conclusions are not necessary in every story. Despite a promising beginning to the story, O Neal most definitely didn’t receive one in Miami.
