The iPhone Duo and Huawei Mate XT 2 Ultimate are not just two expensive foldables chasing the same idea.
They offer two very different answers to what a folding phone should become.
The Duo turns a familiar iPhone into a larger, book-style device. Huawei pushes further with a tri-fold design that opens into a 10.2-inch tablet-like screen.
That makes the comparison interesting for buyers who want more than another premium smartphone. The choice is also less obvious than the price tags suggest.
The iPhone Duo brings Apple’s A20 Pro chip, 120Hz OLED displays, advanced video recording and a tightly integrated iOS experience.
Huawei counters with a larger canvas, 16GB RAM, a 5600mAh battery, faster charging and a three-camera system with a dedicated periscope lens.
The real question is not which phone has more technology. It is which approach makes more sense when the novelty wears off.
Design and Display: Refinement vs. Scale
The iPhone Duo feels like Apple’s attempt to make folding technology disappear into a conventional iPhone experience.
Its titanium frame, Ceramic Shield protection and IP68 rating give it the premium durability buyers expect from a flagship.
More importantly, the hinge and subtle inner crease make the foldable format feel less experimental. Stylus support adds another layer of practicality for notes and creative work.
Huawei takes the bolder route.
The Mate XT 2 Ultimate folds in three sections and uses an improved hinge design, while IP58/IP59 protection is a welcome upgrade for such a complex device.
Its real appeal, however, is what happens when it opens. Instead of simply becoming a larger phone, it becomes something much closer to a compact tablet.
The iPhone Duo’s 7.6-inch LTPO OLED display is arguably the more polished panel.
It supports 120Hz, HDR10, Dolby Vision and up to 3000 nits peak brightness, while the nano-texture and anti-reflective treatment should make the large screen easier to use in bright environments.
The 5.4-inch cover display also keeps the 120Hz experience intact.
Huawei’s 10.2-inch LTPO OLED is the spectacle, offering a 2232 x 3184 resolution, 1 billion colours and 90Hz refresh rate, with a 6.5-inch 120Hz outer display.
