MediaTek has quietly introduced the Helio G99+, a refreshed version of its popular 4G chipset for affordable smartphones.
The new model is now listed on the company's official website, and its main change is upgraded memory support.
The Helio G99+ retains the same 6nm TSMC design and CPU configuration as the original Helio G99.
It still features two Cortex-A76 cores at 2.2 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0 GHz.
The Mali-G57 MC2 GPU, UFS 2.2 storage, 108MP camera support, and Cat-13 4G modem with dual VoLTE are all unchanged.
Why the memory upgrade matters
The key difference is that the Helio G99+ now supports LPDDR5X RAM up to 5500 Mbps, instead of the previous LPDDR4X up to 4266 Mbps.
This shift comes as DRAM makers reduce production of LPDDR4X in favor of higher-value memory types like HBM and LPDDR5X.
By supporting LPDDR5X, the G99+ gives phone makers more flexibility in choosing memory components based on price and availability.
This helps keep the overall cost of budget 4G phones low without requiring a complete redesign around a new chipset.
MediaTek has previously released similar incremental updates like the G100 and G200, which offered modest tweaks while maintaining the same architecture.
The Helio G99+ is not about performance gains but about adapting to industry memory trends.
For manufacturers targeting price-sensitive regions, this update ensures they can continue using the established G99 ecosystem while sourcing available DRAM.
