Insta360 has launched the Luna Ultra, a pocket camera aimed squarely at creators and media professionals.
It appears to target the upcoming DJI Pocket 4 Pro, which hasn't been officially released yet.
We got a chance to try the Luna Ultra Creator Kit. This first look covers its design, camera system, and practical features.
Design and Build
The Luna Ultra features two lenses on the front, giving it a look reminiscent of Wall-E. It weighs 230 grams, about 50g heavier than the DJI Pocket 3.
The device has a relatively large screen, and the shape is noticeable when held.
A standout design choice is the detachable screen, which uses a lock mechanism instead of magnets for a more secure feel.
Once removed, the screen functions as a remote monitor and controller. The kit includes two bases with built-in kickstands; one base has an extra 1000mAh battery.
There's also a wide-angle lens attachment that extends the field of view from 20mm to 15mm, plus a new E-ink microphone from Insta360.
The included protective case is functional but a bit chunky.
Camera System
The Luna Ultra's main feature is its dual-lens setup.
The primary camera has a 1-inch sensor, F1.8 aperture, and 14 stops of dynamic range, capable of shooting 8K video at 30fps.
The secondary camera has a 1/1.3-inch sensor, F2.0 aperture, and supports up to 12x digital zoom.
Both lenses are tuned with Leica color science, and the camera supports 10-bit I-Log recording.
In daylight, the standard mode produces balanced, usable results. The three Leica color profiles offer options depending on preference.
The I-Log profile captures a wide dynamic range, which is helpful for post-production.
In low light, the large 1-inch sensor and F1.8 aperture help.
Compared to the Pocket 3, the image capability is definitely better, but we'll dive deeper in a future review.
Practical Features
The detachable screen is likely the most talked-about feature.
It locks securely into place and, when removed, can be used to frame shots, adjust settings, and control zoom.
